- When was Aprize Satellite Inc. formed?
Aprize was formed in August 2000 to commercialize the planned
AprizeStar satellite constellation using innovative Little Leo
technology developed by its sister company, SpaceQuest, Ltd.
SpaceQuest was formed in 1994 and provides leading edge satellite
technology to companies, organizations and government agencies.
The nanosatellite technology being used by Aprize is part of an
ongoing program of research and development that has been underway
for over ten years. The principals of SpaceQuest successfully
developed a commercial LEOSat system in 1993 that proved the ability
of a new class of low-cost micro-satellites to accurately and
efficiently address the needs of enterprises to track and monitor
mobile and fixed assets.
- Why was Aprize formed?
Aprize was formed to enable enterprises to conduct low cost,
efficient, reliable data monitoring and tracking of fixed and
mobile assets around the world. Aprize utilizes a unique system
design and proprietary satellite technology to provide enterprises
with low-cost satellite data services that are more dependable than
previously available.
- What markets will Aprize serve?
Our initial market focus has been the provision of remote fixed-site monitoring services for the propane industry, the transmission pipeline industry, and related assets such as storage tanks, offshore platforms and oil wells. Aprize is also addressing the asset tracking and data
monitoring markets for the transportation sector, such as trucking,
rail and shipping. Other Aprize markets include
military organizations, government agencies and environmental organizations.
- What exactly do you mean by "mobile assets?"
Mobile assets are basically any cargo that is being shipped. Our system tracks the status and condition of shipping containers, long-haul trailers, railcars, ocean vessels and all types of cargo, from origin to destination.
- And how about "fixed assets?"
Fixed assets are items such as propane tanks and oil pipelines. In the case of propane tanks, for instance, the liquid fuel monitoring market suffers from inaccurate tank level information due to outmoded methods such as float gauges or mechanical tank level measuring devices that are prone to sticking and inaccuracies and require physical visits to record measurements, and to inefficient distribution, delivery and inventory management systems. The cost-effective AprizeStar LPG Tank Monitoring System addresses these needs by providing accurate measuring and reporting of fuel levels without costly visits which in turn produces significant savings in human and capital resources, a reduction of unauthorized sale and theft and improved customer satisfaction.
The monitoring of pipelines also presents unique challenges. Cathodic Protection (CP) prevents corrosion of metallic underground fuel storage tanks and pipelines. However, lack of manpower and high cost makes it difficult to perform the periodic testing that is necessary to ensure that CP systems are operating properly. Many CP system malfunctions therefore remain undetected until the structure that was supposed to be protected corrodes and leaks. It is often too late for corrective action at this point and the pipe or tank must be replaced prematurely. The AprizeStar Pipeline Monitoring System allows CP performance data to be collected from remote locations and delivered to an office desktop, laptop computer or anywhere a simple Internet connection is available. This eliminates the need for personnel to travel to field sites to take measurements, dramatically increases the number of sites that can be evaluated during a given time period, and frees personnel for other duties. Use of the AprizeStar technology also reduces life cycle costs because of reduced manpower levels and increased structure service life.
- Who are the principals behind Aprize
The co-founders of Aprize Satellite are Dr. Dino A. Lorenzini and Mark Kanawati. Lorenzini, who is Chairman and CEO of Aprize, has been involved in managing complex space systems for forty years. He was the founder and president of EYETEL international, the world's first commercial LEO satellite system for worldwide asset tracking and environmental monitoring. As a Colonel in the US Air Force, Lorenzini held senior management responsibilities of several major space projects, including the Apollo Lunar Module, Global Positioning System and the Strategic Defense Initiative System
Kanawati serves as Vice President of Engineering for SpaceQuest and has been involved in VHF/UHF radio communications for more than twelve years. He has been extensively involved with the development, operation and use of low-Earth orbit satellites. He has been responsible for the design, assembly, and integration and testing of several small satellite communications terminals. He also directed the development, installation and operation of a Microsat Command Station for controlling one of the world's first commercial satellites.
- What makes Aprize different
Aprize differentiates itself from competitors by operating a low cost system that is significantly less expensive to operate and maintain. The company is also focused on targeted niche markets and is executing a unique business model.
The manufacture and deployment of Aprize satellites costs a small fraction of what competitors spend. Aprize realizes significant cost reductions on launches, which can be piggybacked onto primary payloads.
The Aprize system has also been designed to use autonomous, inexpensive regional nodes to connect with its satellites instead of costly gateway stations. As a result, operational and maintenance costs are reduced. Data is routed to the customer via the Internet.
The Aprize satellites use innovative technologies that enables the company to deploy satellites that weigh just 25 pounds - yet just as capable as some satellites ten times their size. In addition, the international operating license obtained by Aprize enables the company to operate in the more favorable UHF band to provide transmissions free of interference caused by legal and illegal radio signals.
