Today's technological explosion has raised the bar of expectations for those who need data quickly and reliably.
- A shipping manager has to have the capability to check the status of his containers, wherever on the planet they may happen to be at any given time.
- A facility manager needs to know the performance level of his pumping stations - both in the next town and across the country, without regard to which one is closer.
- And a researcher must be able to retrieve data from the middle of the Pacific Ocean as easily as she could retrieve it from the middle of a nearby pond.
Clearly, the relative location of two regions can no longer be a consideration when initiating communications between them. And the previous methods that have been used to link such places in the past are no longer acceptable today.
